Skull Cleaning & Whitening

Deer Skull Cleaning

A deer skull can be a great reminder of your hunt and be an ornament for the home, but there is a rigorous process of cleaning to make sure the skull doesn’t smell and keeps a long-lasting white color. The purpose of skull cleaning is to remove all of the flesh from the bone so that is can be used as a mount or for hydro-dipping.  There are many different methods people use ranging from boiling the skull to chemical treatments to using flesh eating beetles. We use a proprietary process that removes all the flesh without weakening or damaging the bone. We use the term "deer skull" because it is the most popular skull around, but the same process can be used on any animal skull.

Our Cleaning Process

We use a proprietary process that incorporates several proven techniques that ensure not only a clean skull but one that looks good and isn’t brittle. We utilize dermestid beetles because they offer the most effective results without damaging the skull itself. We also employee several additional steps to produce a clean skull for display or one that is prepared for hydro-dipping.

Dermestid Beetles

We use dermestid beetles from our own colonies to remove the flesh from the bone. We use them because they offer a more aesthetic pleasing appearance to other methods by removing only the meat and none of the bone, resulting in a higher quality skull.  These beetles are harmless creatures that only eat the dead flesh off animal carcasses. The larvae of dermestid beetles feed continuously until all that’s left is bone. This process is known as skeletonization and is often used by taxidermists, museum curators, and law enforcement to aid forensic work because they do not damage the bones like some harsh chemical can.

Skull Whitening

Skulls like deer skulls contain a large amount of oil that needs to be removed in order to have a clean skull whether for hydro dipping or for taxidermy. Our unique process removes the majority of oils without damaging or pitting the bone or its surface again resulting in a higher quality finished product.
